RCD holds majority in Parliament, 5 opposition
parties win seats
Tunisia 25 October 2004
The Democratic Constitutional Rally (RCD) has maintained its absolute
majority in the Tunisian parliament after the Sunday elections.
The RCD party has won 152 out of 189 seats in the Chamber of Deputies. It
used to hold 149 seats in the previous 182-seat legislature.
Five of the country’s seven opposition parties will be represented
in the Chamber of Deputies:
-- "The Social Democratic Movement" (MDS) : 14 seats,
against 12 in the previous legislature.
-- "The Popular Unity Party" (PUP): 11 seats, against
7 previously.
-- "The Unionist Democratic Union" (UDU) : 7 seats, the
same as before.
-- "Ettajdid Movement" (former communist) : 3 seats,
against 5 previously.
-- "The Liberal Social Party" (PSL) : 2 seats, the same
as before.
The Progressive Democratic Party and independent slates did not
win any seats.
The RCD has held 80% of the seats in parliament since the 1999
elections. Five opposition parties have shared the remaining seats
since then based on a provision in the election law allocating 20%
of the seats to political parties which do not win the majority
of votes in the various electoral districts.
The new Parliament will include a higher ratio of women. A total
of 39 out of the 152 RCD-affiliated members of Parliament are women,
against 20 in the previous legislature. The higher figure of women
MP's comes after a decision by President Zine El Abididine Ben Ali
according to which the majority party (which he chairs) will present
no less than 25% of women candidates in its legislative slates.
The other new trait of the Tunisian Parliament is the absence of
members of government, who for the first time did not run for legislative
seats.
