2004 Elections in Tunisia:

Access of the candidates to the media

- All along the election campaign, Tunisians had access to free, pluralistic and well-balanced information.  In addition to the news coverage of their campaigns by audiovisual media and newspapers, all candidates had access to the public radio and television on the basis of fair and equitable criteria.

- During the legislative election campaign, the heads of the various electoral slates received five minutes of air time each, during which they expressed their different points of views.  The distribution of the TV and radio air time was accordingly as follows: 84.53% of air time was used by opposition and independent candidates and only 15.47% was used by candidates of  the ruling party, the RCD, who received 130 minutes out of a total of 840 minutes.

Spokespeople for the opposition parties and the independent slates had access to about 12 hours of TV air time and almost the same length of time on the radio, during the 12 days of the legislative campaign.

- As for the presidential campaign, the candidate of the Ettajdid Movement,  Mr. Halouani, used 16 minutes and 30 seconds of air time, that of the PUP, Mr. Mohamed Bouchiha, 22 minutes, and that of the PSL, Mr. Mounir Beji, 17 minutes.

-         The print media press including the political parties’ newspapers covered the election campaigns of all canddiates without any distinction.
