Boosting Internet in Tunsia

The Tunisian Government has done a great deal to develop Internet access and boost the number of users. This government action include:

  • Internet subscription charges and phone call costs were reduced by over 50% in May 1998. An additional 30% in March 1999. Special rates for family use were also introduced;
  • A national fund was set up to help develop Websites;
  • The creation of public Internet access centers called PUBLINETS.
  • Other promotion activity was done through:
  • Internet awareness seminars and conferences;
  • Training programs on Internet technologies;
  • Special Radio and TV educational programs to introduce Tunisian families to Internet and encourage its use.
In November 1999, an "Internet Week" was organized. A countrywide showcase of what Internet has to offer, the celebration included an "Internet Caravan" visiting all parts of the country and offering hands-on Internet services including seminars and workshops for business communities and the general public. During the week, 50% discounts on new accounts were offered and all public Internet access centers offered free browsing. The week was topped off by a "Web Awards" ceremony broadcast live on national television showcasing the best of Tunisian websites. The "Internet Week" was such a success that organizers are thinking of making it an annual event.
