Dionysus Triumphal Procession
This mosaic, probably from the so-called "House of Virgil," in Sousse, depicts the majestic
procession of the triumphant god, who is standing, his head wreathed in vine-leaves, holding a long thyrsus (lance)
in one hand and the reins of his chariot in the other. Alongside him stands a Victory. At the left of the chariot
walks a maenad, striking a tambourine. In the foreground are two secondary figures, Dionysis as a child, and a
panther drinking from a vase. Flocks of birds make a border above the grapevine foliage which is filled with grape-gathering
Cupids.
3rd c. AD(Sousse Museum).
